General turning
Start with the full insert code, holder and workpiece material.
Turning insert requirementsCheck compatibility and the working conditions before trying an alternative insert. Use the result to decide whether a repeat order makes sense.
The same insert shape can perform differently with another grade, chipbreaker or setup. Give us the application details needed to discuss a trial candidate.
| Check | Details to provide |
|---|---|
| Insert and holder | Full insert code, grade, chipbreaker and holder model; photographs if available |
| Workpiece | Material designation, hardness if known, and whether the cut is continuous or interrupted |
| Operation and setup | Roughing or finishing, machine, workholding, coolant and overhang |
| Current conditions | Cutting speed, feed and depth of cut, with units |
| Current result | Parts per usable edge, finish requirement and main failure mode |
| Order requirement | Trial quantity, destination country and expected repeat demand |
Record your existing tool and the trial tool on the same job, with clearly documented conditions. Track acceptable parts, edge changes, finish and any scrap.
Insert cost per acceptable part = insert price / (usable edges per insert × acceptable parts per edge)
This is the insert-cost component only. Add machine time, tool-change time and scrap costs when evaluating the full production cost. A cheaper insert does not always give a lower cost per part.
